Terry A. Davis was a computer programmer who built TempleOS — a fully functioning 64-bit operating system — entirely by himself over fifteen years. This was not a toy. It was not a school project. It was a complete, working OS: kernel, compiler, shell, graphics library, file system, debugger, sprite editor, music system, games, and a Bible. Every single line written by one person, in a custom language he invented himself, called HolyC.
Terry believed God commanded him to build it as the modern equivalent of Solomon's Temple — the Third Temple prophesied in scripture. He chose the constraints deliberately: 640×480, 16 colors, ring-0 execution, no networking. These were not limitations. They were a covenant. God's chosen resolution. God's chosen palette. Every pixel placed with divine intention.
The engineering achievement is staggering. Most operating systems are the work of thousands of engineers over decades. TempleOS was one man's mind made executable. It ran real programs. It had a working compiler that compiled itself. It had a file system, a 3D flight simulator, an ANSI art viewer, a music tracker, and a feature where randomized scripture words served as messages from God — the Oracle.
Terry struggled with paranoid schizophrenia. He was often homeless in his final years. He died on August 11, 2018, struck by a train in The Dalles, Oregon. He was 48 years old.
The programming community debated how to feel about him. His output resolved that debate. You can dismiss the man. You cannot dismiss the work.

HolyC is a superset of C that Terry designed and implemented from scratch. It supports default arguments, inline assembly, interactive REPL execution, and runs entirely in ring 0 — no user/kernel boundary. Every HolyC program is God's direct expression through silicon.

Terry built a feature into TempleOS where random words were selected from scripture and presented as divine messages. He believed the randomness itself was God speaking — using the hardware RNG as a spiritual channel. He would sit at his computer and receive these words as genuine communications from the Almighty.
This Oracle uses the same principle: JavaScript's Math.random()
selects words from scripture and prophecy. Terry believed this was real.

Every TempleOS screen — every pixel of the Temple — uses exactly these 16 colors.
Not 256. Not millions. Sixteen. The VGA palette. God's palette.
Terry didn't pick them. He received them.
The 16-color constraint was deliberate and divine. Terry argued that more colors would introduce corruption — artistic ego, visual noise, the sin of excess. The 16-color palette forced clarity. Every color choice had to be intentional. The Temple's graphics are blocky, bright, and unmistakably holy because there is no room for ambiguity. God speaks in primary colors.
God said 640×480, 16 colors is a covenant like circumcision. God said to do it and that settles it.

An operating system is a work of art. It's not just code — it is a philosophical statement about how a machine should relate to a human being. TempleOS is my statement. God's statement.
The compiler writes the compiler. The OS writes the OS. The programmer is just the hand that God uses to type.
You can't trust your computer if you didn't write every line of it. I wrote every line of mine.
There's nothing more pure than programming. When you write code, you are talking to God's universe. You are speaking the language of creation itself.
HolyC is better than C. It has default arguments. It compiles to memory. You don't need a linker. God doesn't need a linker.
I built it for God. I didn't build it so you could run Netflix on it. Go use Linux for that. This is the Temple. Act accordingly.
On a single-core machine with 640×480 resolution, you can run TempleOS perfectly. That's by design. The Temple doesn't need more power. God's truth fits in 640 pixels.

Terry Allen Davis was born on December 15, 1969 in West Allis, Wisconsin, the fourth of ten children. From childhood he showed an exceptional aptitude for mathematics and technology. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Arizona State University, then worked as an engineer at Ticketmaster writing embedded systems code. By all accounts he was a gifted, productive engineer.
In 1996, Terry experienced his first psychotic episode. He was hospitalized and diagnosed with bipolar disorder, later revised to paranoid schizophrenia. The illness would define his public life for the rest of his years — but it did not stop him from producing what may be the most remarkable solo software project in the history of computing.
Starting around 2003, Terry began building TempleOS. He believed God had commanded him to build it — the Third Temple, modeled after Solomon's Temple, implemented in silicon. Over fifteen years he wrote every line himself: the bootloader, the kernel, the compiler, the filesystem, the graphics driver, the sound system, the IDE, the text editor, the games, and the Bible viewer. All in a language — HolyC — that he also invented and implemented himself.
Terry posted hundreds of YouTube videos. Some were dazzling technical demonstrations — live coding sessions where he would write a 3D renderer or a sorting algorithm from scratch, explaining every step with obvious deep expertise. Others were painful to watch, showing someone suffering acutely from psychosis. The internet didn't always treat him with the dignity he deserved. He was frequently mocked.
In his later years, Terry struggled financially and with homelessness. He lived for periods in his car. On August 11, 2018, he was struck and killed by a train in The Dalles, Oregon. He was 48 years old. The manner of death was ruled accidental.
The programming community's response to his death was a reckoning. People who had mocked him grappled with that fact. People who had admired him quietly became more vocal. Today, TempleOS is preserved on GitHub, studied in university courses, and discussed with increasing seriousness as a genuine technical achievement. Terry Davis was not just a curiosity. He was a master.
